San Diego is a city that represents a confluence of cultures, as well as the traditional foods they bring to the metaphorical table. As if all the food and sun they could ask for wasn’t enough for San Diegoans, though, Amazon just made their lives even easier.
The eCommerce giant announced Tuesday (Feb. 16) that it had expanded its Prime Now restaurant delivery service to include businesses in and around the San Diego area. The coverage area includes 16 zip codes within San Diego proper — a selection that Gus Lopez, general manager of Amazon Restaurants, believes will keep Prime Now customers in San Diego coming back for more one-hour deliveries.
“San Diego has great cuisines from all around the world and we are excited to bring them right to the doorstep of San Diego customers through Prime Now Restaurant Delivery,” Lopez said in a statement. “Starting today, San Diego customers can browse dozens of great local restaurants and place an order to be delivered in under an hour – no more fighting traffic to get food from your favorite local restaurants.”
Amazon claims that the average delivery time for orders placed through its Prime Now restaurant program is about 39 minutes, and San Diegoans will be able to track the progress of their meals just like diners already enjoying the service in Seattle, Portland, Los Angeles, Chicago, Austin and Baltimore — the company’s only East Coast delivery operation to date.
Lopez stressed to The San Diego Union-Tribune that prices under the Prime Now delivery program will never come with hidden or added fees, as its chief competitors in the space — GrubHub, DoorDash and Postmates — all charge. It’s a luxury of being one of the world’s largest retailers; Amazon can stomach the loss of a handful of dollars other companies need to sustain revenue streams, all the while delivering a service with enough convenience to more than offset the missed money in the eyes of hungry diners.
