The acquisition of a device manufacturer is simply to keep a solid hedge in their #1 position of mobile OS. It would be naive for anyone to think that by simply purchasing Motorola that it would give any OS a leg up in payments - considering that the smartphone marketplace is dominated by #1 Android and #2 iOS, with manufacturers such as HTC and Samsung making up a large share of the device sales for the OS.
This is simply a way for Google to ensure that one of the "Big 3" doesn't end up creating iOS-based devices.
