The Smart Card Alliance has a very good diagram of the open payments credit card payment transaction flow. It shows the autjorization request flow between the merchant and the acquirer/processor, the autorization request flow between the acquirer and the payment brands, and the payment brand and the card issuer. The figure was donated by Booz Allen Hamilton for use in a Smart Card Alliance white paper on Transit and Retail Payments: Opportunities for Collaboration and Convergence

MasterCard did a couple of good pieces to explain their business to investors including some map of the carc industry. Can be found in the investor section of www.mastercard.com

The December 2008 Australian Low Value Payments Roadmap (at page 6) produced by the Australian Payments Clearing Association (APCA) has a "payment system topology" that seeks to provide a simple graphic representation of the various levels within the low value payment environment. The graphic is a highly simplified representation of reality and designed to help advance the discussion within the Roadmap. The Roadmap can be found at www.apca.com.au - please look for the link on the right hand sidebar of the home page.
