The technology, which allows devices to communicate via touch or close proximity, would give Wii U owners the ability to instantly purchase in-game items or apps without being required to divulge credit card information. This type of technology has been increasingly utilized in Japan over recent years.

“By installing this functionality, it will become possible to create cards and figurines that can electronically read and write data via noncontact NFC and to expand the new play format in the video game world,” said Nintendo President Saturo Iwata during the company’s third quarter financial briefing.

With the inclusion of the NFC technology within its upcoming system, Nintendo looks to gain an edge over Xbox, Playstation and other competitors.
