Driving Innovation for the Next Generation Payment Solutions

Name: Louis Blatt, Ph.D.

Title: Chief Product Officer

Company: ACI Worldwide

What I’m working on now… Next Generation Payment Solution

My crowning achievement is… Led four large technology companies to their next generation solution including: (1) Wang Labs – stylus based word processing, 1986; (2) AT&T – Interactive Television, 1994; (3) Peregrine Systems – Next Generation Service Management, 2002 (4) CA- Next Generation Enterprise IT Management (EITM), 2009.

Education… M.A. Boston University, Ph.D. Boston University.  (Specialized in Human Factors In Computers)

When I’m not working, I like to… Winter Hiking, Tennis, Hanging out with my family.

I think the next big thing in payments is… Agile Payments: a unified approach to managing the entire lifecycle of payments independent of payment type, customer type, channel, or geography.

Cash is… Useful for people that want to keep their activities a secret and operate off the grid.

Checks are… Not sure what checks are.  I think they are pieces of paper that you write on but I am seeing less and less of them.

NFC is… Ultimately be adopted and will be embedded into form factors that replace the cell phone.

EMV is… Required to offer the convenience of M-payments in a secure fashion.

P2P will… Need the support of the banks to become a significant force in payments.

My mentor is… My mentor is Phil Heasley.  He taught me that it is teamwork not individual accomplishment that will usher in the next generation of payments.

  • I always laugh when I hear people proclaim the death of the check. "what are checks?" well they happen to be the largest non-cash payment method in America with $40 trillion in annual volume versus $2.3 trillion in credit card volume. Checks are not going away, but they are become fully electronic, and the digital check industry will dwarf all other payment methods.
