Chipotle intends to add a mobile payments feature to its ordering app in the near future.
The popular food chain announced during an earnings call in late January that it will invest $10 million to upgrade its mobile app to include a mobile payments option.
“We are experimenting with mobile payments, and we have kind of a rough version right now that our employees are able to use,” Chipotle’s chief financial officer, John Hartung, remarked, according to Bloomberg.
In a statement, a Chipotle spokesperson told Bloomberg that customer engagement is a big part of the mobile payments initiative and that the mobile app will also be leveraged to send more special offers and menu alerts to customers.
