PayPal has partnered up with mobile location firm Placed so that they can trace real-world consumer visits to every place customers are spending money.
In an attempt to understanding customer preferences and habits better, the program has signed up 125,00 volunteers who, in return for gift cards and other promotions, have agreed to have their mobile location data precisely tracked by the company using GPS and Wi-Fi. There will also be questionnaires to validate the tracking data.
PayPal can use this data to target rewards, advertisements and push notifications to PayPal users, particularly those who use the company’s mobile wallet to pay in-store for goods.
The data gathered with the tracking program is not associated or saved under particular customer profiles.
