Apple Pay’s Diner Acceptance Grows

P.F. Chang’s casual style dining restaurant chain Pei Wei is now accepting Apple Pay, pushing the total number of restaurant locations accepting Apple Pay over 45,000.

After running a pilot test in its 16 Phoenix-based dining locations in July, the restaurant chain is now offering the NFC-powered payment method in nearly 200 locations across the country.

“Accepting Apple Pay is a win for Pei Wei because it’s convenient and gives our guests the flexibility to use their preferred method of payment,” said Pei Wei CEO Ralph Bower.

“It allows us to safely and quickly process transactions, increasing both customer service and restaurant efficiency. This is just one way we’re implementing the latest technology to improve the dining experience,” he added.

The Asian restaurant chain joins a list of eight other restaurant chains currently accepting Apple Pay in the United States.

Adding Pei Wei’s (pronounced as pây wây) 200 locations, there are now approximately 45,543 restaurants accepting Apple Pay, according to the PYMNTS Apple Pay Adoption Tracker.

The step towards introducing Apple Pay as a mobile payment method is methodological after Pei Wei’s parent company P.F. Chang’s was hit by a data breach at 33 locations between October 2013 and June 2014, affecting the credit and debit card details of the restaurant patrons.

While Pei Wei joins a list of slowly but steadily growing merchants accepting Apple Pay, consumer trends on Apple Pay usage seems to tell a story of losing numbers.

According to the results from the most recent PYMNTS/InfoScout Apple Pay Transaction Tracker, the number of users who didn’t use Apple Pay because they just plain forgot increased, from 32 percent to 34 percent.

Whereas the number of consumers abstaining from Apple Pay because they just aren’t sure how it works rose to 34 percent, up from 31 percent observed in March this year.
