Solar Power, Inc. is shedding light on the solar power world of B2B digital commerce. According to reports released Tuesday (April 28), SPI has launched its B2B eCommerce site SolarTao.com in China, offering a platform for buyers and suppliers in the solar power and vertically-integrated photovoltaic (PV) industry to conduct their business.
According to SPI Chairman Xiaofeng Peng, the site aims to be “a driving force in creating an efficient PV supply chain in China.”
“SolarTao.com leverages SPI’s rich industry resources and experience to enable upstream and downstream players to match supply and demand in a cost-effective manner,” he said, “thus adding value along the entire PV supply chain and also helping to create a solar industry ecosystem.
In its announcement, SPI cited recent data from iResearch Consulting Group, which found that B2B accounted for nearly three-quarters of China’s eCommerce sales in 2014. The industry is expected to expand in a big way, and SPI’s latest venture appears to be an effort to snag a piece of the action.
While B2B online shopping sites are slowly gaining traction among the procurement community, it is not as common for an industry-specific platform to arise, such as SolarTao. Still, China is one of the world’s leaders in spearheading business-to-business online shopping, especially thanks to eCommerce giant Alibaba and the firm’s recent initiatives to boost business for domestic suppliers, both at home and abroad.
