Experts Available to Discuss Preventing Identity Theft During the Holiday Season

ExpertSource:

TOPIC:

The 2009 Identity Fraud Survey Report claims more than 4.3 percent of American adults fell victim to identity theft in 2008, according to an article (http://economy.kansascity.com/?q=node/4383) by The Kansas City Star. On average, the fraud amount was $4,849 per victim, as stated in the Javelin Strategy & Research report. Identity theft is expected to increase during the holiday shopping season. Experts recommend tips to prevent identity theft from occurring, including monitoring bank and credit card accounts for strange activity and only using credit and debit cards that have zero liability in case they are lost or stolen.

EXPERTS: ExpertSource can offer several highly qualified experts to comment on this story:

Todd Davis has quickly become one of the top spokespersons on the topic of identity theft protection. As the CEO of LifeLock, the nation's first proactive identity theft protection company, Davis travels regularly meeting with law enforcement and elected officials in an effort to find additional answers to fight the growing crime. Davis is a member of the Crime Prevention Coalition of America (CPCA) and a contributing member of the IDSP (Identity Theft Prevention and ID Management Standards Panel) that works directly with the President's Identity Theft Task Force.

Steve Bachenheimer is the founder and CEO of Kemesa (an acronym for Keeps Me Safe), a security software company. He started the company several years ago when a friend’s daughter was arrested for not showing up in court following a drunken driving charge. Turns out, her identity had been stolen by someone who had really committed the crime; it took several years of fighting through legal red tape to clear her of the erroneous charges.

Steve decided there had to be a better way to protect people’s personal information, so he leveraged his past consumer goods experience with companies such as Procter & Gamble, Remington and National Foods (Hebrew National) to start this new company. Kemesa is the company behind Shop Shield (www.shopshield.net), the first security product of its kind to be categorized by the Identity Theft Resource Center (ITRC) as a Secure Payment Agent (SPA). Shop Shield has the power to change the way consumers shop and pay bills online by preventing online identity theft before it starts. Shop Shield works by replacing personal and financial information with anonymous, untraceable data enabling consumers to shop online, pay bills and interact with websites worry-free.
