Walmart Pay Ready for iOS App Users

In the latest sign that the payments service wars might heat up a bit, Walmart has updated its iOS application — this time, enabling Walmart Pay, which takes its place among new features offered by the retailing giant.

As reported by Ubergizmo, the addition of Walmart Pay means that consumers who shop with fervor at the big box retailer now have the ability to check out, in store, with a QR code prompt. Using the mobile device and app to scan the QR code, users will get an electronic receipt confirming that the payment attempt was successful.

As was widely reported, Walmart was among the retailing holdouts against adopting Apple Pay. Other new additions to the app include paper receipts and streamlined returns made in store.

Walmart Pay was announced toward the end of last year and was in pilot programs across several states, with a national rollout slated for June of this year. The retailer will not keep card data on users’ phones but instead will hold customer data in a virtual setting, according to reports.

Among the caveats related to the service as it gets rolled out: Users must also be tied to a Walmart.com account and must link their payment methods — in the form of credit or debit cards — to the app. Walmart gift cards must also be linked to the account and the app. In addition, thus far, it is not yet clear which Walmart stores are ready to go live or already are live with the new Walmart Pay feature.
