Primark, a European clothing dealer, has reported that credit card skimming equipment was found on “a limited number of card payment machines” in two of its U.S. stores in the King of Prussia Mall and Willow Grove Mall, both in Pennsylvania.
The brand also confirmed that some credit and debit cards may have been compromised beginning on July 29, though it does not believe all card transactions were effected. As of yet, there is no information as to who planted the devices, though they have since been removed and law enforcement has already been involved in the case.
Primark has only be operating U.S. locations for about a year and is still in the process of preparing a nationwide expansion.
Primark didn’t provide any information on how many skimming devices were found or how many payment terminals were impacted. It also gave a date on which transactions might have started to be affected, but it’s not clear how Primark arrived at that date or how many transactions might have occurred on affected machines before the skimming devices were discovered — or even when they were discovered. It did, however, note that security was its main priority, as was transparently disclosing details as they emerge.
Simple card skimmers do not work on EMV chip cards, but as of yet, it is unknown what type of skimming devices were used.
