On Monday US President Joe Biden renominated Democrat Rebecca Kelly Slaughter to the Federal Trade Commission, which has been working to toughen enforcement of antitrust law under his administration, particularly pushing back against “Big Tech”.
Slaughter was originally sworn in in 2018. She remained as acting chair of the commission early in the president’s term until the current chair, Lina Khan, could be brought on board following her confirmation.

FTC Chair Lina M. Khan issued the following statement regarding the White House renomination of Rebecca Kelly Slaughter to serve as an FTC Commissioner: “Many congratulations to Commissioner Slaughter on her renomination. She is a model commissioner, whose leadership and expertise have deeply enriched the FTC’s vital work. I wish her a swift confirmation.”
Recently the FTC has tackled a range of high-profile issues, from creating a rule intended to greatly limit the use of noncompete agreements to difficult merger challenges, such as Facebook parent Meta’s acquisition of virtual reality content maker Within Unlimited. In a term that has also seen its share of pushback from both legislators and courts, a federal judge declined the agency’s request to halt the deal this year.
