Spain: Copa del Rey bid doesn’t comply with regulations: CNMC

 |  April 2, 2018

Spain’s National Commission for Markets and the Competition (CNMC) has said that the draft for the bidding contest that will grant the rights to broadcast the final matches of the Copa del Rey and Supercopa football tournaments sent by the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) “does not meet any of the requirements,” putting at risk the transmission of one of the largest sporting events in the country.

The regulator considers that the document sent to the CNMC on February 28, 2018, does not comply with the requirements in terms of publicity, transparency, competition and non-discrimination; in addition to not providing sufficient details in terms of marketing rights, content and scope of the tendered rights.

Consequently, the CNMC has asked the RFEF to make a “totally new” formulation of the contest to allocate the rights and choose the television operator that will broadcast the Copa del Rey final match on April 21.
