Spain: CNMC speaks out in favor of Energy Market regulations

 |  November 20, 2017

The National Commission of Markets and Competition (CNMC) has spoken out in support of regulations on the energy market, considering it the most convenient scheme for consumers.

In countries like Spain, where hydroelectric generation has a significant impact on the market price, “we cannot hope that in the dry years we will have the same prices as in the rainy years,” said CNMC president José María Marín Quemada, alluding to the complicated weather that has affected hydroelectric production in the country.

According to the latest Report on the gas and electricity retail market for domestic consumers and SMEs, between July 2015 and June 2016, the Regulated market resulted in savings of 32 euros per year, 6% annual turnover

For example, in the gas market, the difference between being in the regulated market (TUR) and the cheapest rate in the free market meant savings for consumer of between 30 and 44 euros per year depending on consumption. This amount is between 4% and 13% of the yearly bill for the period analyzed by the CNMC.
