Mexico: Telecomm regulator approves Shared Network evaluation procedure

Mexico’s telecommunications regulator, the Federal Telecommunications Institute, has approved the methodology used to evaluate the compliance of major mobile operators with obligations related to the Wholesale Shared Network (Red Compartida Mayorista). The methodology establishes procedures to evaluate compliance with the commitments of coverage and speed of transmission to which license-holders have agreed, the IFT explained.

    “The concession title for taking part in the RCM establishes the obligation to comply with a coverage percentage of at least 70% of the aggregate population at the national level,” the IFT recalled. The regulator also issued rulings in favor of five bidders to provide services to private radio communication systems.

    Currently each Mobile operator has its own network, causing duplicate expenses and blind spots in coverage throughout the country. The “Red Compartida” implies the creation of common infrastructure that allows for sharing and lowering costs, as well as extending coverage, with the goal of reaching 98% of the population within 7 years.
