US: Attorney General files antitrust case against Carolinas HealthCare

 |  June 9, 2016

One of charlotte’s biggest health care providers is being sued in the state.

North Carolina Attorney General Roy Cooper filed an anti-trust lawsuit against Carolinas HealthCare System Thursday.

The lawsuit claims the health system is illegally reducing competition in Charlotte’s health care market, preventing customers from finding better deals, while having to pay more at CHS.

“Pushing medical costs artificially higher and limiting choices harms North Carolina families,” Cooper said in a news release. “Consumers who need health care deserve accurate information and access to quality, affordable options.”

CHS is based in Charlotte and operates “Carolinas Medical Center” and nine other hospitals in the Charlotte-area. It dominates the hospital market in the Charlotte region with a 50 percent share of the market and approximately $8.7 billion in annual revenues.
