India: Vodafone said to meet with incoming officials as merger tax dispute continues

UK telco giant Vodafone has reportedly met with Indian financial officials, sources said, and while the nature of the meetings was not disclosed, Vodafone is currently in the midst of a tax dispute in India stemming from its acquisition of Hutchison Whampoa.

    According to reports, Indian officials, including India Finance Secretary Arvind Mayaram met with Vodafone while the nation welcomes new elected leaders and Vodafone is looking to resolve the tax dispute.

    India claims Vodafone owes the government about $2 billion in taxes for its $11.2 billion acquisition of the Indian operations of Hutchison Whampoa. The acquisition of a 67 percent stake in the company occurred in 2007.

    Vodafone denies that it owes the taxes, according to reports.
