US: FTC’s Ramirez takes focus on healthcare

The US Federal Trade Commission held a two-day conference in Washington late last week to examine competition in the nation’s healthcare market, according to reports.

FTC Chairwoman Edith Ramirez launched the workshop early Thursday, telling attendees that “healthcare accounts for over 17 percent of GDP and study after study tells us that vigorous competition in healthcare markets reduces costs, improves quality and expands access to care for consumers.”

The regulator met to discuss regulatory oversight of the industry to promote innovation and increase price transparency in the industry.

The authority’s conference was open to the public; the FTC first requested public comment regarding competition in the healthcare market with a 50 questionnaire handout. Reports say the regulator is accepting public comment until the end of April.
