Israel: Key legislative committee officials allow new powers for antitrust regs

The Antitrust Authority is one step closer to having the powers to probe the level of competition in various sectors of the economy, say reports, as the Knesset Economics Committee has approved of proposed amendments to the nation’s antitrust law.

The proposed changes would allow the Antitrust Authority to perform a market inquiry in various economic sectors, then relay its findings to the Treasury and to the sector’s corresponding minister, according to reports.

But the legislative changes were not without opposition. Reports say the Manufacturer’s Association has expressed criticism over the amendments, specifically regarding the bill’s clauses with regards to the disclosure of the Authority’s findings. The Association is asking for amendments to include a clause that offers companies a hearing, but antirust authorities have rejected this suggestion, say reports.
