EU: EC launches chemical merger investigation

The European Commission announced Wednesday that it has launched an in-depth investigation into the merger between chemicals makers Huntsman and Rockwood over concerns the deal could harm competition.

    Reports say the Commission will probe Huntsman’s acquisition of Rockwood assets and will decide by July 22 on whether the deal was legal or not.

    Specifically, the regulator said it is concerned that the merger reduces competition in the sulphate-based titanium dioxide industry, a chemical used in various products including toothpaste and paper.
