The American Antitrust Institute reinforced its calls Tuesday for the US Department of Justice to outright block the planned merger between ConAgra and Cargill/CHS Horizon Milling, saying their proposed concessions are inadequate.
According to reports, the AAI and the Food & Water Watch separately resounded calls for the DOJ to reject the joint venture. The parties have offered to divest four flour mills, but the AAI and Food & Water Watch said that the sales “would not come remotely close to remedying the competitive and consumer harm in markets across the US.”
In a letter sent to the DOJ, the groups say they the joint venture would place total control of the nation’s wheat flour supply under just two companies: ConAgra-Horizon Milling and Archer Daniels Midland.
