A high-profile lawyer has been chosen to become the external monitor of the business practices of Apple Inc., a move that fulfills part of a judge’s recent ruling that found Apple guilty of colluding with eBooks publishers to manipulate eBooks prices.
Michael Bromwich will fulfill the role as Apple’s watchdog for two years following the ruling by US District Judge Denise Cote; he will be assisted by Bernard Nigro, the head of Fried Frank’s antitrust department.
Bromwich practices at Goodwin Procter and was one of two candidates nominated by the Department of Justice, which first launched litigation against Apple in the eBooks price-fixing case.
Bromwich is a noted high-profile lawyer as a formal federal prosecutor in New York. Chosen by President Obama, Bromwich headed the US offshore drilling regulator following the 2010 oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.
