An investigation launched last November by European officials found that Chinese makers of solar panel technology sold in the EU received state aid, increasing the likelihood that regulators will impose taxes on Chinese imports of the technology to counter the aid’s effects on trade.
Makers of crystalline silicon photovoltaic panels reportedly received stated aid from preferential lending and tax programs. An EU official confirmed the findings, which are part of one of two probes launched into Chinese-based solar panel makers, this week.
The European Commission approved earlier this month an agreement with Chinese-based companies to curb imports to prevent dumping; domestic solar panel companies had accused the foreign firms of selling products at below-market costs, provoking an investigation into the matter. Minimum prices for Chinese-made solar products were set.
The official who confirmed the most recent findings, and who asked not to be identified, said the report does not undermine the Commission’s agreement with Chinese solar panel makers.
