US: Senate’s Klobuchar to hold hearing on patent trolls

The head of the Senate Judiciary Committee’s antitrust subcommittee Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) has scheduled a hearing to examine standard-essential patents, or SEPs, to evaluate the potentially anticompetitive effectives of so-called patent trolls. According to reports, the hearing will likely be a continuation of discussions heard at last year’s meeting, which centered around entities that hoard SEPs to sue others when those patents are used, and the practice’s threat to competition. The Judiciary committee looked at such patent trolls this time last year.
