US: Good news for Visa, MasterCard in ATM cases

Visa Inc. and MasterCard Inc. have reportedly won the dismissal of an antitrust suit brought against the payment giants by ATM operators, as well as the dismissal of two other related cases. A US District Judge in Washington ruled that the plaintiffs did not provide sufficient evidence to show the credit card companies made an anticompetitive agreement between each other to restrict how much ATM operators could charge for using alternative networks. The lead case was headed by the National ATM Counsel Inc. and 13 independent ATM operators. According to the complaint, the ATM operators were barred from charging less for networks that competed with Visa or MasterCard.
