South Africa: Oil importer fights antitrust exemptions for fuel cos

Gas2Liquids has launched the first appeal over exemptions made for certain South African oil companies by the Competition Act. The wholesaler and importer of petrol products appealed the exemptions to the Competition Tribunal; the exemptions, apparently made to ensure the stability of the market, protect some companies from certain prohibitions. Gas2Liquids, however, argues that the protections would only benefit certain companies of the South African Petroleum Industry Association. The exemptions were reportedly made after a severe oil shortage in 2005 and allow for some companies to appeal for allowance of certain behaviors usually banned by the Competition Act, such as meeting with competitors to make agreements.
