UK’s competition watchdog, the Competition & Markets Authority (CMA), announced on Friday that it has accepted commitments from tech giants Meta and Amazon aimed at promoting fair competition on their retail platforms.
According to Reuters, the CMA’s investigation into Amazon Marketplace and Meta’s use of advertising data has concluded with these commitments from the U.S. tech companies. Amazon has pledged to provide a fair opportunity for independent sellers using its marketplace to have their offers featured in the coveted “Buy Box.”

Meanwhile, Meta has agreed not to exploit its advertising customers’ data, allowing competitors who advertise on its platforms the option to opt out of having their data used to enhance Facebook Marketplace.
Amazon’s commitment also includes refraining from using marketplace data of rival sellers to gain an unfair advantage. This ensures that third-party marketplace sellers can compete on an equitable playing field, as confirmed by the CMA.
The CMA had previously indicated in July that Amazon’s proposed changes to the treatment of third-party sellers on its Marketplace platform were sufficient to address competition concerns. Meta has expressed its approval of the regulator’s decision.
