TRENDING: Detroit Lions Put Mobile-Ordering Into Play

 

Consumers may be willing to wait hours in line for the latest iPhone model, but when it comes to food, they have little patience to spare. That’s especially true for consumers at venues like airports or sports stadiums, where waiting in line for a meal can mean missing a flight’s boarding time or celebrating a touchdown.

These are location-specific use cases that QSRs are looking to address with new mobile order-ahead solutions aimed at customers on the go. And with that in mind, many are even changing their store design to accommodate the surge in mobile ordering foot traffic.

In the March Mobile Order-Ahead TrackerTM, PYMNTS details how companies are introducing mobile order-ahead services into new types of businesses, and working to get customers in and out of line faster than ever.

Around the Mobile Order-Ahead World 

The year 2016 saw 719 million domestic passengers travel through U.S. airports. But strict boarding times mean many hungry travelers simply don’t have the time to wait in line to order food from airport restaurants. Mobile ordering solutions provider LevelUp and airport eCommerce platform Grab recently partnered to level mobile order-ahead against that problem.

And consumers seeing films in theaters, not as in-flight movies, may also get mobile-ordering services to speed them on their way. Canadian entertainment company Cineplex is testing out a mobile ordering service to enable moviegoers to order-ahead popcorn and other concessions.

Meanwhile, sandwich chain Capriotti’s designed its latest Las Vegas-based store to accommodate order-ahead capabilities smoothly. That includes a drive-up window for easy pickup and a mobile ordering station.

Detroit Lions Add Mobile Order-Ahead to the Playbook

Football fans may be weighing their hunger against the risk of missing seeing a critical play, should they encounter a line at the stadium’s restaurants. To tackle the issue, the Detroit Lions are exploring whether mobile order-ahead for pickup can remove that pain for fans seated in its Gridiron Club section, as well as drive traffic to the four new restaurants available at the club.

PYMNTS recently caught up with the Lions to discuss the key takeaways from their order-ahead trial and what went into designing a mobile order-ahead app specifically for a football stadium setting.
