The healthcare logistics firm Owens & Minor announced Monday (Jan. 10) it will acquire the home health equipment provider Apria in a transaction worth $1.6 billion.
Owens & Minor President and CEO Edward A. Pesicka said in a news release that the deal will let his company “better serve the entire patient journey — through the hospital and into the home. In addition, this transaction diversifies our total company revenue stream by expanding our presence in the higher-growth home healthcare market.”
“I am energized and enthusiastic to join Owens & Minor,” added Dan Starck, CEO of Apria. “Both companies share cultures fueled by a commitment to customers, patients, teammates and the communities we serve. We look forward to joining together and delivering the highest quality healthcare solutions to our customers.”
Based in Indianapolis, Apria specializes in products and services for home respiratory therapy, sleep apnea treatment and negative pressure wound therapy.
Founded in 1882 in Richmond, Virginia, Owens & Minor supplies “self-manufactured surgical and PPE products” to more than 4,000 healthcare industry customers.
This deal follows Owens & Minor’s $380 million acquisition of the White Plains, New York, home health supply distributor Byram Healthcare in 2017.
The company says the acquisition of Apria expands its Patient Direct Platform, combining its expertise in diabetes, ostomy, incontinence and wound care, with Apria’s strength in home respiratory, obstructive sleep apnea and negative pressure wound therapy.
These areas are complementary, Owens & Minor said, as many of these products are needed to treat the same acute and chronic illnesses.
