Walgreens is now part of the PayNearMe retail payments network, which offers bill payments for people who use cash for bills and other noncommerce transactions, according to a press release on Wednesday (March 9).

“Approximately 78% of the U.S. population lives within five miles of a Walgreens or Duane Reade store,” said Michael Kaplan, chief revenue officer and general manager of PayNearMe. Walgreens acquired Duane Reade in 2010.

“With Walgreens in our retail network, our clients can now offer their cash-preferred customers even more convenience by allowing them to pay their bills in the same location where they shop,” Kaplan added.

Over 4,600 Walmart locations recently became part of the PayNearMe network via its Green Dot partnership. Additional retailers will soon be added to PayNearMe, the company said.

“In the last 12 months alone, PayNearMe has increased its retail footprint by nearly 50%,” Kaplan said.

PayNearMe users can walk into any participating retailer and make a payment with cash by showing the cashier a scannable code on their smartphone. A receipt is issued when the transaction is complete.

“The Green Dot Network, which features more than 90,000 cash reload locations, is a valuable asset to partners as they focus on empowering customers with more seamless, secure, convenient access to their money,” said Brandon Thompson, executive vice president of retail, tax, direct and Paycard at Green Dot.

Launched in 2009 in Silicon Valley by CEO Danny Shader, PayNearMe develops technology that advances payment experiences for businesses and their customers.

PayNearMe processes all forms of payment including cards, ACH, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal and Venmo. Cash payments are enabled through its proprietary electronic cash network that includes participating 7-Elevens, Family Dollars and Casey’s General Stores.
