China: Qualcomm settles patent dispute with China’s Meizu

Qualcomm said it has reached a world-wide patent-licensing agreement with Chinese smartphone maker Meizu Technology, consolidating its hold on the Chinese phone market.

Qualcomm, which dominates the market for semiconductors that enable cellphones to communicate with networks, had sued Meizu in several countries this year to force the smartphone vendor to license its patents.

The new agreement settled all disputes between the two companies, said Qualcomm, based in San Diego, Calif.

Meizu, based in southern China’s Guangdong province, had been one of the last holdouts in China in the chip maker’s effort to establish its patent-licensing business in that country. Meizu President Bai Yongxiang said in a statement that the deal would add “tremendous value” to users and shareholders.
