Canada: Competition Bureau hosts American and Mexican counterparts for the annual trilateral meeting
The heads of the competition authorities of Canada, the United States and Mexico gathered for the annual meeting with the purpose of discussing work currently carried out by each to guarantee the effective enforcement of competition policy in the North American markets, as well as cooperation opportunities between the three countries.
The topics discussed include the enforcement of antitrust laws in digital markets, as well as the recent agency developments and the challenges faced when enforcing the law.
The meeting was held at Canada’s Competition Bureau offices, in Gatineau, Quebec, where the following heads of authority participated: the Chairwoman for the Mexican Federal Economic Competition Commission, Alejandra Palacios; the Chairman for the United States’ Federal Trade Commission, Joseph J. Simons; the Assistant Attorney General for the Antitrust Division of the Department of Justice, Makan Delrahim, and the Commissioner for Canada’s Competition Bureau, Matthew Boswell.
These meetings are based on the 2000 cooperation agreements for the enforcement of competition law among the governments of Mexico and the United States; and the 2001 agreements between Mexico and Canada. Through these agreements, the authorities agreed to work together to make their respective antitrust policies and enforcement of competition law as sound and effective as possible.
