Microsoft’s President Meets With EU To Talk AI Regulations

 |  June 29, 2023

Microsoft President Brad Smith discussed the advantages of regulating artificial intelligence and the ways in which the US software giant can assist during a speech in Brussels, echoing his previous message in Washington.

According to Reuters, Smith, along with Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and owner of Twitter, has been engaging with regulators and lawmakers to advocate for the regulation of AI. This technology has gained significant public attention with the introduction of ChatGPT by OpenAI, which is supported by Microsoft.

Big Tech companies have provided recommendations on how to effectively regulate AI, potentially mitigating the impact of these regulations on their business.

The European Union is currently developing the AI Act, a set of rules that could potentially serve as a model for other nations.

“Our intention is to offer constructive contributions to help inform the work ahead,” Smith said in a blogpost. He subsequently reiterated his message at a conference in Brussels.

The speaker mentioned that Microsoft’s five-point blueprint for governing AI, which includes government-led AI safety frameworks, safety brakes for AI systems that control critical infrastructure, and ensuring academic access to AI, is in line with the EU’s proposed legislation.
