OpenAI is set to challenge Google’s dominance in the search engine market with the launch of SearchGPT, an AI-powered search engine designed to provide real-time information from across the internet. According to The Verge, SearchGPT aims to offer a more organized and insightful user experience, potentially transforming how people search for and interact with information online.
SearchGPT differentiates itself from traditional search engines with its user-friendly interface and intelligent result organization. Users are greeted with a large textbox asking, “What are you looking for?” Instead of merely listing links, SearchGPT interprets and summarizes search results. In one demonstration, it provided detailed descriptions of various music festivals, complete with attribution links. In another example, it explained the optimal times for planting tomatoes, detailing different plant varieties. The search engine also allows users to ask follow-up questions and explore related links through a sidebar.

While the specifics of some features, such as “visual answers,” remain undisclosed, SearchGPT is currently a prototype, limited to 10,000 test users at launch. OpenAI spokesperson Kayla Wood told The Verge that the service is powered by the GPT-4 family of models. To curate its search results, OpenAI is partnering with third-party providers and using direct content feeds, with plans to eventually integrate these capabilities into ChatGPT.
The introduction of SearchGPT represents a significant shift in the search engine landscape, positioning OpenAI as a formidable competitor to Google. Google has been rapidly integrating AI features into its search engine in an effort to maintain its user base amid emerging competitors offering advanced tools. OpenAI’s entry into this market also places it in direct competition with Perplexity, an AI “answer” engine that has recently faced criticism for allegedly copying publishers’ content.
As OpenAI continues to develop and expand SearchGPT, the competition with Google is expected to intensify, potentially leading to innovative advancements and enhanced user experiences in the search engine domain.
