Virgin Mobile will soon arrive in Peru as the country’s fifth mobile operator. However, the company will not be laying down any infrastructure of its own. Instead, Virgin has planned to lease out part of the broadband assigned to its main competitor, Spain’s Telefónica.
Transport and Communications Minister José Gallardo joined Virgin Mobile Peru’s CEO to celebrate the company’s arrival. The British company has a growing presence among Peru’s Latin American trading partners, including Chile, Colombia and Mexico.
Mr. Gallardo predicted that the arrival of a new operator will inject some vitality into the country’s mobile market, hoping to emulate “the important changes in the telecommunications sector” that other countries in the region have already begun. The company will face competition from four well-established operators – Spain’s Telefónica, Mexico’s Claro, Chile’s Entel and Vietnamese operator Bitel.
