South Africa: Is the government rejecting the Deputy Commissioner’s resignation?

South Africa’s Deputy Competition Commissioner has announced that he will resign from his position at the end of the month. Tembinkosi Bonakele, who has been at the Commission for nine years, announced his resignation on Tuesday but denies internal power struggles as the reason. The nation’s Economic Development Minister Ebrahim Patel, however, has rejected the announcement; his department sent a letter to the Commission notifying that Bonakele would remain in his position until further notice. According to reports, requests for clarification on the matter and on Bonakele’s future went unanswered.
