Spain: 3000 officials sign up to detect fraud in public procurement

More than 3,000 public officials will be part of the coordinated effort by Spain’s National Commission of Markets and Competition (CNMC) to detect irregularities in public procurement, part of a campaign against fraud in public tender processes.

The agency, said its president José María Marín Quemada, has trained more than 3,000 officials, in addition to offering a list of elements for consideration when assessing the existence of possible anti-competitive agreements during public contests, such as a small number of contestants, incoherent bids, and unjustified similarities, among others.

Currently, the CNMC has focused research on the hiring of urban cleaning, school canteens and the supply of concrete for possible indications of fraud. The agency estimates that the benefits for the population of these and other activities could come to about €600 million annually.
