Spanish competition regulator CNMC played host this Monday to the International Competition Network’s 2016 Cartel Workshop annual meeting. Throughout the event representatives from 60 competition authorities around the world met to exchange procedures and share experiences, with the aim of improving their efficiency in the ongoing battle against cartels.
The ICN is a global network of competition authorities whose objective is to promote and improve competition policy around the world, to encourage fight against uncompetitive practices, and to find proposals for procedural convergence and facilitate cooperation between competition authorities. The CNMC plays host to over 150 member delegates from 60 competition authorities.
Spanish authorities have declared the fight against cartels a top priority. Fourteen cartels were ended in 2015, with sanctions totalling over 549 million euros. So far in 2016, the authority has dismantled a further 8 cartels, with over 170 million euros in fines.
