Spain: CNMC demands Iberdrola return €12 million in undue subsidies

 |  November 27, 2017

Spanish regulator CNMC has charged Iberdrola with making an “irregular” use of natural gas in its solar thermal plant in Puertollano, with the intention of charging more than €12 million in subsidies for renewable energy between 2009 and 2011.

The CNMC has found that Iberdrola exceeded the maximum thresholds for the use of gas allowed, and assumes that part of the energy put into the electric grid must have been generated with gas, instead of solar sources.

The CNMC’s resolution obliges Iberdrola to return the amount above and reflects that the Puertollano plant is not the only one in this situation. The demand for a refund of subsidies affected 43 plants between 2010 and 2013.
