Several of the UK’s largest telecommunications firms have filed a complaint with industry watchdog Ofcom challenging BT’s power in the business broadband market, say reports.
The complaint is calling for greater competition in the industry on claims that BT has an effective monopoly.
According to reports, the UK Competitive Telecommunications Association – made up of Sky, TT, TalkTalk, Vodafone and Virgin Media, among others – argued to the OFT that competing companies should be able to install their own infrastructure to control BT cables, which are run through the subsidiary Openreach. Reports say Openreach still holds a dominant market position three decades after BT was privatized.
A spokesperson for Ofcom said “the UK already has the most competitive broadband market of any major European country.”
