Argentina’s market leader in pay TV, media giant Grupo Clarín’s Cablevisión service, has received authorization from the country’s telco regulators (ENACOM) to add communications services to its portfolio. Cablevisión will thus become the first and only operator able to offer a full ‘Quadruple Play’ service package: Pay TV, Broadband, Mobile (after their purchase of Nextel late last year) and now fixed line telephone.
ENACOM also permitted broadband company Fibertel (also owned by Clarín) to transfer its license for telecommunications services and related services to Cablevisión, a move that had been blocked by the previous administration.
Argentina’s other Telecom operators, Telefonica and Telecom, are meanwhile blocked from offering their own Pay TV services for a period of between 2 and 3 yeas, a ban imposed by a Decree issued in December 2015 which modified the country’s media laws landscape as the new administration stepped in.
