Colombia: SIC warns of millions in fines for misleading advertising

The Superintendence of Industry and Commerce (SIC) of Colombia warned that travel agencies or stores that offer tourist packages or fake products will be strongly sanctioned, since an increase of more than 20% in the number of complaints for this concept is expected following the end of the year tourist season.

In 2018, the SIC imposed more than 1,000 sanctions in this regard, representing more than 43,000 million Colombian pesos (approximately US $ 13.2 million) for violations of consumer rights.

The entity has released a report, stating that Alkosto, Éxito and Cencosud are the companies most fined (in the last 5 years) for violating consumer rights. In total, according to that medium, in 2018 310 companies have been sanctioned for violating the consumer’s statute.
