Dominican Republic’s La Unión business group, an association that brings together dozens of small businesses in the cargo transport sector, has made a plea to the Government to intervene on their behalf against what they claim is a monopoly imposed by the National Federation of Dominican Transport Workers (FENETRADO).
La Unión accuses FENETRADO of blocking it’s competitors’ transport vehicles any time FENETRADO itself is not hired to cover at least 50% of any transportation contract. Ricardo de los Santos, FENETRADO’s acting President, responded by saying that this situation is covered by an agreement signed with La Unión.
La Unión has asked the Attorney General’s office to give their members all necessary support when facing FENETRADO’s road blocks. The group has accused FENETRADO of imposing “their own laws” in order to secure 50% of all public and private contracts by using blackmail and extortion tactics.
