You may be in San Diego right now, with the sun smiling down as you glide on your new skips through a lush park. As we write this in Boston, it’s 16 degrees with a stiff north wind blowing. What are we supposed to do? Think healthy thoughts? Nonsense. We’ll just use a fitness app.
Know what else? We’ll get in better shape than you. We can be shockingly competitive.
It’s all in good fun here at PYMNTS’ Provider Ranking of Fitness Apps. We’re the caring types who just want our audience to stay healthy, get that heart rate up and break a sweat.
Elevated heart rate and perspiration can also be caused by driving in the snow — what would San Diegans know about that? — but for now, let’s pick a lane and keep it on fitness apps freeway.
The Top 5
A new champ rules the rankings this month. Rising to No. 1 for the first time, it’s the Workouts By Muscle Booster app, which tied for this position last cycle. They must’ve done extra reps.
Dropping a spot to No. 2 is MyFitnessPal, which was tied at No. 1 last time around. Months ago, we said to keep an eye on this app. We’re not just proud of that prescience … we’re smug about it.
Down a spot, we’ve got Planet Fitness Workouts at No. 3, keeping it tight (but not overly so).
The Sweatcoin Walking Step Counter apps takes a step in no direction, sticking at No. 4.
We’re used to tied scores around here, so when we find one, it’s no big deal — unless two apps are tied at key points, like the No. 5 chart position. Yet it is so for this ranking, as the FitCoach app remains in place (they were No. 5 last cycle), now joined there by Strava: Run, Ride, Swim.
Our feelings are consistent and clear on this. If you stick to the Top 5 — even in a tie — you win.
The Top 10
Moving on, the FitOn app holds its corner of gym at No. 6 for another cycle.
Same story at No. 7 as Runkeeper — GPS Running Tracker runs in place.
Another tie from last cycle disappears as we get to No. 8 and find the Nike Training Club app making a move by not making a move. Sounds like a Zen riddle … about sneakers.
Tumbling one spot to take No. 9, this cycle it’s the Map My Run By Under Armour app.
The No. 10 position on the Provider Ranking of Fitness Apps often seems up for grabs, but hey, that’s how unknowns become number one’s. They need an access point at No. 10.
This cycle, that changeable No. 10 goes to the Daily Workouts Fitness Trainer app, which, while being down a spot, is still in the Top 10 — and that’s what really matters.
Good workout, apps. Now cool down for 10 minutes and drink water.
