Walmart-Owned Flipkart’s Shopsy App Tops 175 Million Downloads in India

Walmart-owned Flipkart Group’s Shopsy app is growing both in numbers and geographically across India.

The eCommerce app for discounted resale products has tripled its number of units, customers and sellers over the past year and has been downloaded 175 million times as of March, Walmart said in a Thursday (June 8) press release.

The Shopsy platform has also expanded geographically, reaching smaller towns in India as well as big cities, according to the release.

The platform’s growth has been driven by young people in India — with people younger than 35 years old accounting for 90% of its new customers — and budget-conscious families, the release said.

“Many of these customers are exploring eCommerce for the first time and are looking for value options,” Walmart said in the release.

Shopsy now provides access to more than 150 million products in over 80 categories, all with a focus on affordability, according to the release. Among the fastest-growing categories are watches, jumpsuits, hair trimmers and mobile phone covers.

“Shopsy is a story of an aspiring India, a population keen to make the most of its smartphones, high data speeds and fast-rising incomes,” Kapil Thirani, head of Shopsy at Flipkart, said in the release. “We at Shopsy are delighted to see the strong growth and heightened participation of customers across the country.”

Walmart purchased majority ownership of Flipkart in 2018 for $16 billion and has since won an eCommerce victory over Amazon in the country.

The Flipkart deal has established Walmart as an industry leader in India, although both it and Amazon have lost market share to homegrown companies like Reliance Industries and the Tata Group.

eCommerce sales in the country are expected to reach $135 billion by 2025, triple the amount from 2020.

PYMNTS research has found that India’s eCommerce market is one of the fastest growing in the world. Eighty-eight percent of adults in the country use some form of mobile wallet and 833.7 million consumers are connected to the internet, according to “The Merchant’s Guide to Opportunities in High-Growth Markets,” the February edition of the “Global Commerce Tracker®,” a PYMNTS and Worldline collaboration.
