Folks throughout the country will be out enjoying the mid-summer July 4 holiday today, and households in Washington will be spending more than in any other state, new research shows. But across all states the top spending will be on the same expected staples: alcohol, food and decorations.
Hoopla, imbibing and eating are expected experiences on the Fourth of July, and it rings true when looking at what consumers will spend the most on this Independence Day holiday, new research shows.
In preparation for having friends over for a barbecue, or perhaps going to the park for a family picnic, American households will spend the most on alcohol, food and decorations when it comes to their July 4 spending. And residents of Washington will spend the most, according to money-saving website CouponCodesPro.com, which between June 23 and 25 surveyed 2,938 American citizens ages 18 and older in all 50 states. The average household size of those polled in the study was five people – two adults and three children.
Individuals initially were asked if they had already started making plans and purchases for July 4 celebrations. The majority, 81 percent, said they had done so, and the rest said this year they were leaving their Independence Day celebration planning late to try and save money through retailer last-minute discounts, according to the survey findings.
Asked what holiday expenses respondents’ households would be spending the most on this year, the top five answers were alcohol, 34 percent; food, 21 percent; decorations, 16 percent; fireworks, 13 percent; and travel costs, 11%.
In terms of their estimated family spending toward celebrating the holiday this year, the average amount stated was $235 per household. However, when broken down into the averages of how much respondents in particular areas of the country were planning to pay out this year, those in certain states were prepared to spend more than others.
States where households on average were prepared to spend the most on Fourth of July celebrations were Washington, $415; California, $390; New Jersey; $320; Texas, $310; and Georgia, $295.
“Whether you spend the 4th of July celebrating with friends at a cookout, barbeque or picnic, or watching fireworks in the park with your family, there are inevitable costs associated with the holiday that can certainly add up,” George Charles, financial spokesperson at CouponCodesPro.com, said in a statement. “As the nation gears up for Friday’s festivities, the team here at CouponCodesPro has seen an 815% increase in searches for ‘4th of July decorations’ compared to this time last month.”
