Based on a reported decline in sales, retail giant Nordstrom has decided to drop Ivanka Trump’s line of clothing and accessories.
As with several other retailers that have had disagreements with the Trump family, President Donald Trump took to Twitter like a fish to water to voice his thoughts on the matter. Following his tweets, many retailers have seen their stocks impacted for either better or worse.
Nordstrom offered this statement in response: “Over the past year and particularly in the last half of 2016, sales of the brand have steadily declined to the point where it didn’t make good business sense for us to continue with the line for now. We’ve had a great relationship with the Ivanka Trump team.”
Nordstrom is sticking to its reasoning that the Ivanka Trump brand was given the ax due to poor sales. While Ivanka herself has not made any formal public statements, she maintains that the decision was political and had nothing to do with a sales decline. Following Nordstrom’s decision to remove the brand, Neiman Marcus, T.J. Maxx and Marshalls have also followed suit.
With all of the retail brands connected to the Trump family, Nordstrom’s decision to drop Ivanka’s clothing and accessories line may be just the first domino in the inevitable stack to fall. Throughout the remainder of the Trump presidency, retailers will likely ask themselves if carrying the brand is worth any potential negative impacts on the rest of their business.
