Macy’s Says Holiday Season Hiring ‘Consistent’ With Last Year

Macy’s plans to hire more than 38,000 seasonal full- and part-time positions for the upcoming holiday season.

The positions will be available at Macy’s, Bloomingdale’s and Bluemercury stores, as well as the company’s distribution centers, the retailer said in a Monday (Sept. 18) press release.

The number of seasonal positions this year is “consistent” with the open positions in 2022, according to the release.

This news comes as many retailers in the United States have announced holiday hiring plans that are much lower than they were in 2022 and the lowest since 2008, Reuters reported Monday.

Macy’s seasonal hiring plans included 41,000 workers in 2022, and 76,000 in 2021, per the report.

With consumers concerned about the state of the economy and their own shrinking household savings, this year’s holiday sales are expected to grow slower than they did over the past five years, the report said.

Andrew Challenger, senior vice president at employment service Challenge, Gray & Christmas (CGC), told Reuters in a report published Friday (Sept. 15): “We have never gone this far into September and not had big hiring predictions from retailers. It’s really surprising.”

To make the hiring process more convenient for candidates, Macy’s is offering an online application process that takes as little as five minutes, with most job offers made within 48 hours, according to the company’s press release. Macy’s is also organizing two nationwide in-person holiday hiring events Sept. 21 and Oct. 19.

Danielle Kirgan, chief transformation and human resources officer at Macy’s, said in the release that the holiday season is important for the company and its employees.

“Whether they are looking for extra income for the season or the start of a new career in retail, we offer an unmatched culture, competitive pay and fulfilling retail career opportunities,” Kirgan said in the release.

Employees also have access to instant earned wages, flexible scheduling, merchandise discounts and referral bonuses, per the release. Additionally, they may have the opportunity to earn incremental income through various incentive programs.
