Fans of ride-sharing pioneer Uber have for a long time speculated on its potential to develop into a global logistics firm. Uber customers in Hong Kong are getting a chance to test drive that future now with a “rent-a-van” service called Uber Cargo.
Like Uber’s bike messenger launch in NY last year, the one-off quiet beta test of the service in Hong Kong is consistent with Uber’s habit of single-city launches as it develops its offerings beyond taxi-like services.
According to an Uber blog post. the service can be used for items of all kinds, with prices determined by distance traveled and total delivery time.
Why Hong Kong?
Van rental services are already existent in the city-state; Uber will launch with two “Uber-like” van service startups in place to compete with them. It also consistent with Uber’s planned Asian expansion, which the company confirmed would be the focus of the $1.2 billion in financing the company raised to end 2014.
